Commit to getting healthier.  Where the mind goes, the body will follow. Make healthy choices every day by following the SYOLifestyle (based on the 24-hour Challenge and my experience):

  • Plan ahead.

    • When you shop, purchase a variety of fresh fruit and veggies to have on hand.

    • Keep a bowl of fresh fruit on the table to remind you to eat healthy snacks.

    • Keep a container of prewashed and cut veggies in your refrigerator so you can grab them quickly.

    • Pack fruit/veggies/nuts when you leave the house, so you don’t make unhealthy choices during the day.

    • Keep nuts in the car to tide you over, so you don’t end up in a drive-thru.

  • Consciously think about what you are putting into your mouth before doing so.

  • Eat healthy foods, drink sufficient water and exercise regularly (at least five days per week).

    • Eat the following:

      • Veggies and fruit (several colors per day)

      • Whole grains, e.g., quinoa, brown rice, oats

      • Healthy proteins, e.g., tofu, wild seafood, beans

      • Healthy fats, e.g., avocado, walnuts, olive oil

    • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Drink more when exercising.

    • Find exercise that you enjoy doing:

      • Dancing, which promotes physical, mental and emotional wellness

        • Classes (line dancing and zumba have great music; confidence is gained once dance steps are mastered; mental effort is involved; leg bones are strengthened; friendships are formed)

        • Around the house listening to music

      • Walking

        • Outside - enjoy the scenery; go to parks, the beach, around the neighborhood, etc. Get paid to walk by using the Sweatcoin app. You can earn extra coins by referring friends. (Please consider using my code: sweatco.in/hi/jan115950 so that I can earn extra sweatcoins.)

        • Inside - read, watch TV, surf the web, etc. while on a treadmill or marching in place

        • Track steps - shoot for at least 10,000 per day. Try to get up and walk at least 250 steps every hour. It’s not good to stay sedentary for long periods of time.

      • Cycling

        • Outside - enjoy the scenery; ride to parks and/or other places of interest

        • Inside - read, watch TV, surf the web, work, etc. while on an indoor bike or trainer

      • Swimming

      • Playing sports - lots of possibilities here

      • Gardening, yardwork, etc.

      • Completing challenges (see Pinterest for suggestions)

  • Exercise with a buddy and/or group. This also helps hold you accountable to stay on your journey to good health.

  • Use exercise to deal with stress!

  • Get plenty of sleep every night. If you wake up refreshed without an alarm clock, you have gotten enough.
